Vanilla sugar is a great way to impart a subtle vanilla flavour into anything you are baking. You can also add it to your hot cocoa, tea or coffee or make simple syrup with it. You can even package it in little jars to give as gifts or wedding/shower/party favours. It's so easy to make and you only require two ingredients: sugar and vanilla bean. It will quickly become a staple in your pantry!
Here is an easy recipe for vanilla sugar.
- 2 cups of sugar
- 2 vanilla beans
- Add sugar in a bowl
- Using a sharp knife, slit the vanilla beans down the middle and scrape out the seeds in a downward motion using the back of a knife. Add to the sugar and reserve the empty pods.
- Mix the sugar and vanilla seeds well (you can use a food processor).
- Pour the sugar and vanilla mix in an airtight container and add back the empty pods, submerging them into the sugar.
- Let the vanilla flavour infuse the sugar for 2 weeks or more.
